Last Sunday, talked about Bible reading plans and encouraged us to not be simple and to heed the warning from . It reads...
Proverbs 1:32–33 ESV
32 For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; 33 but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”
For 2018, I’d love for us to dwell secure and at ease, rather than fearing “disaster.”
Considering everything we went through in 2017, dread of disaster, may be a real fear. Well, spoke to that directly.
“Whoever listens to Wisdom, dwells secure.”
What was wisdom?
Does anybody remember?
Applied knowledge. Correct.
And, in order to be wise about 2018, we have to approach this thing differently.
Here’s what I mean.
“It starts with Jesus and ends with Jesus.”
Let me explain where and what.
Proverbs 8:22–31 ESV
22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. 23 Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth, 26 before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. 27 When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, 29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, 31 rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man.
Proverbs 8 ESV
1 Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? 2 On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; 3 beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: 4 “To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man. 5 O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense. 6 Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right, 7 for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. 8 All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. 9 They are all straight to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. 10 Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, 11 for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. 12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion. 13 The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. 14 I have counsel and sound wisdom; I have insight; I have strength. 15 By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; 16 by me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly. 17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me. 18 Riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness. 19 My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield than choice silver. 20 I walk in the way of righteousness, in the paths of justice, 21 granting an inheritance to those who love me, and filling their treasuries. 32 “And now, O sons, listen to me: blessed are those who keep my ways. 33 Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. 34 Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. 35 For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, 36 but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.”
Proverbs 8:
Interesting scripture here. Let’s also check...
Proverbs 8
John 1:1–13 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:1-
And also....
Colossians 1:15–20 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Colossians 1:

Let me say it again. It starts and ends with Jesus. How does that apply?

Everything belongs to Him. How do we submit to that? (Colossians)
Get into His Word and get familiar with the light. specifically reveals that the “true light” has come into the world. However, it was not entirely received. That’s crazy. He made everything and not everything sees Him as creator.
“Getting familiar with the light.”
Proverbs 11:5 ESV
The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness.
Proverbs
Proverbs 11:6 ESV
The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust.
Proverbs
Proverbs 11:8 ESV
The righteous is delivered from trouble, and the wicked walks into it instead.
Proverbs 11:19 ESV
Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die.
Proverbs
Proverbs 11:23 ESV
The desire of the righteous ends only in good, the expectation of the wicked in wrath.
Proverbs
Receive Him. Don’t reject Him.
This morning, Mr. Jamey made reference to buying someone a nice gift and he asked the question… “How would you feel if you worked real hard to purchase a nice gift for someone, only to have them tell you, ehh I’ll open it later?”
We would be upset about that! God has done the very same thing for us, we ought not reject Him, but receive Him and welcome Him.

Conclusion

Proverbs 8:32–36 ESV
“And now, O sons, listen to me: blessed are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.”
